Abstract
574,365. Open-circuit breathing apparatus. BAILEY, A. June 29, 1943, No. 10541. [Class 81 (ii)] In open-circuit breathing apparatus carried by the user and comprising cylinders of compressed air and a lung operated valve, the valve comprises a tubular or hollow element 1 with a connection 2 for the mask, and having a flexible wall or diaphragm 3 which, when the user inspires, operates a lever 7 against the action of a spring 9 to open a valve 22 leading from the tubular element to a chamber 24 enclosing a bellows 25, the bellows being adapted to collapse on the pressure in the chamber reaching a determined maximum, for example, two atmospheres, and close a second valve 40 against the action of a spring 36, to prevent further admission of compressed air through the pipe 43. The flexible wall 3 may be made of rubberised fabric and is protected by a cover 44 having apertures 47 which may be closed by the rotation of a shutter 48 if the flexible wall is damaged. Rotation of the shutter also operates an inverted U-shaped member 54 to press a boss 57 against a plate 6 in order to maintain valve 22 in the open position. The tension of the spring 9 may be adjusted by rotating a milled disc 16. The bellows 22 may be of the flexible metallic cylindrical corrugated wall type, and has its interior in direct communication with the tubular element through two hollow bolts, and its lower plate connected to a lever 30 pivoted at 31, one end of the lever operating the valve 40 and the other end being controlled by the spring 36. Fig. 5 shows the lung-operated valve A in position on the back of the user between two cylinders of compressed air, and connected to a multi-way piece 60, one branch of which leads to a pressure gauge attached to the belt of the user. The tube leading to the mask may have a branch to a breathing bag enclosed in a case also attached to the belt. A modification is described in which only one cylinder of compressed air is used.
