Abstract

574,211. Cores for moulding. GRENEKER, L. L. Jan. 17, 1944, No. 894. Convention date, Jan. 16, 1943. [Class 87 (ii)] A hollow destructible moulded core, which may be used for moulding indiarubber fuel tanks, is made of plaster of Paris or other frangible material reinforced by a rope buried therein. After the fuel tank has been moulded on the core, the rope is engaged through the opening in the tank and pulled out, thus breaking the form to pieces, and the pieces are withdrawn from the tank through the opening. To facilitate engagement of the rope, one end thereof may project from the core. Fig. 6 is a section through the mould 10 in which the core has been cast, the core comprising plaster 24 and 30, cheesecloth reinforcement 25 and rope 28. The rope is arranged in the plaster in loops. The core may have an opening in its wall, corresponding to the opening in the fuel tank. Figs. 4 and 5 show a three-piece mould for making the core, comprising a two-part base 10, 11, and lid 13, the base and lid being aligned by lugs 15 and notches 16. Ropes or wires 19, 20, hold the parts 10 and 11 together while the plaster (with cheesecloth and rope embedded therein) sets on the inside of the mould and lid. The two core parts are cast in the base. and the lid, and the latter are assembled, whereupon the core parts coalesce.
