573,829. Gauging- devices. WILDMAN, H. S., and PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Oct. 18, 1943, No. 17131. [Class 60] [Also in Group XIX] A gauge for checking internal diameters comprises two doubleended sliding jaws 1, 2, Fig. 1, mounted on telescopic tubes 3, 4, respectively, and urged together by the coiled spring 8 attached to opposite ends of said telescopic tubes 3, 4. The jaws 1, 2 can be moved apart by operating a lever 32, not shown, so that fluid under pressure enters tube 3 acting as a cylinder and moves tube 4 to the right. The distance between the jaws 1, 2 is initially set so that the lower diamond facings are in contact with the internal diameter of a. " master " workpiece. The feeler of a dial gauge 7 is then adjusted to touch the upper contact of the jaw 2 and a distance piece 6 resting on a frame 9 is placed with one of its ends in contact with the upper diamond facing of jaw 1 and its other end in contact with the nose 11 of a micrometer 10. In gauging workpieces, deviation from standard is shown on the dial gauge 7. The caliper assembly is fixed to a carriage 19, on a shaft 124 which is itself attached to a shaft 125, Fig. 3, by means of two links 20. A hydraulic system consisting of a ram 25 operating in a cylinder 26 and controlled by the same handle 32 transmits movement to a crank 24 and by means of a parallel linkage system 22 gives vertical movement to the whole caliper assembly. The eccentric shaft 29a on the shaft 29 provides means for the lateral adjustment of the caliper assembly. After each gauging operation, the jaws 1, 2 are moved slightly closer to release the workpiece and in order to prevent long movements of the jaws an electromagnet 17 and a blade spring 18 are provided for locking them in any desired position.
