Abstract

573,338. Making coherent masses from powders; muxes. CLARKE, E. J., and MUREX 'WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd. May 20, 1942, No. 6839. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A welding rod for gas or electric arc welding is produced by moulding to the desired shape a mixture including a metal powder and a thermoplastic or thermosetting resinous composition, e.g. phenolformaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin, and including thermoplastic compositions based on cellulose derivatives such as for example, ethyl cellulose. For ferrous rods, the powder may consist of iron powder together with powdered alloying ingredients such as' nickel, chromium or molybdenum. For non- ferrous rods, copper powder with powdered deoxidizers may be used, or nickel powder with chromium, molybdenum or tungsten powder or two or more thereof. For ferrous rods, fluxes such as rutile, fluorspar, felspar, magnesite or ferro-silicon may be mixed with the powder before moulding. The ferro-silicon also acts as a deoxidizer. For gas welding or hand-feed methods of arc welding, the rod is used in the moulded form, but for continuous feed methods of arc welding, the moulded product is previously heated to sintering temperature of the order of 600-1300‹ C. to sinter the powder and remove the resinous composition. Sintering is conducted in a non-oxidizing atmosphere or in vacuo and the moulded rod may be supported for this operation on a bed of alumina powder without the risk of the powder adhering to the rod. The sintered rod may be subsequently coated with flux by treating with a molten flux of low melting point such as borax or the rod may be coated with flux by conventional methods instead of or in addition to being provided in the sintered core.
