Abstract

573,337. Making coherent masses from powders ; fluxes. CLARKE, E. J., and MUREX WELDING PROCESSES, Ltd. May 20, 1942, No. 6838. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A welding rod comprises a metal wire core surrounded by a sheath of sintered metal powder. The powder may also contain a binder such as paraffin wax, sodium silicate or a thermoplastic or thermosetting resinous composition such as is described in Specification 573,338, or fluxing and/or deoxidizing, agents. The powder is moulded round lengths of core in separate moulds or is extruded continuously into the form of a sheath round a continuous wire and thereafter passed through a sintering furnace at 600-1300‹ C., preferably containing a reducing atmosphere. A soft iron or mild steel core may have a sheath of sintered iron powder with or without nickel, chromium or molybdenum. A copper core may have a sheath of sintered copper powder and deoxidizer and a nickel core may have a sheath of sintered chromium-molybdenum or tungsten powder or a mixture of two or more such powders. Flux may consist of powdered rutile, fluorspar, felspar, magnesite or ferrosilicon, the last-named of which also acts as a deoxidizer. The flux may be applied as coating to the sheath instead of or in addition to forming part of the sheath. The flux coating may be applied in the ordinary manner or by treating the sintered product with a molten flux of low melting point such as borax, A sheath, for use on a mild steel core may consist of 70 parts of iron, 12 parts of ferro-manganese, 4 parts of felspar, 8 parts of rutile and 6 parts of china clay, or 30 parts of chromium, 2 parts of molybdenum, 15 parts of tungsten, 45 parts of cobalt, 5 parts of iron and 3 parts of carbon mixed in either case with sodium silicate solution. A sheath for use on a nickel core may consist of 30 parts of chromium, 2 parts of molybdenum, 15 parts of tungsten, 35 parts of cobalt, 15 parts of iron and 3 parts of carbon together with sodium silicate solution.
