Abstract
573,118. Preparing cylinder bores; polishing. WHITEHEAD, E. J. Nov. 10, 1942, No. 15879. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXVI] The bores of cylinders, liners or sleeve valves are prepared by surface hardening the bore surface, roughening it by shot- or sand-blasting and smoothing the roughened surface by honing or lapping to remove sharp excrescences and leave it minutely pitted. The surface hardening may be effected by nitriding followed by the removal of a layer over-rich in nitrides ; the hardening may also be effected with the roughening by shot-blasting, using broken steel shot. The ends of cylinder liners or sleeve valves may be masked during the blasting to prevent bell mouthing.
