Abstract

A design can be produced on a polished metal surface by shot blasting the exposed areas (3) of a mask or stencil (2) is made of rubber and is about 1 mm thick. This thickness is adequate to prevent the masked surface being marked by the shot. The mask may be fixed to the metal surface with a layer of adhesive which allows the mask to be removed for repeated use. Alternatively, with surfaces of magnetic materials the rubber of the mask may contain a magnetic filler such as particles of barium or strontium ferrite.
