Abstract
567,371. Abrasive materials. BALZ, W. G., and DAVIDSON, L. R. Feb. 23, 1943, No. 2971. [Class 91] An abrasive material for polishing articles preferably by the tumbling method comprises fragments of crushed granite having the sharp points and edges removed without destroying the angular character thereof. The abrasive may be prepared by subjecting the fragments to tumbling with an abrasive. The material may be used with other abrasives, pumice base compound being specified. In the preferred method of working, the tumbling barrel is charged with the articles to be polished, the prepared granite fragments, other abrasive material, and water. The articles may be further polished in a second step by the same method using a mixture of similarly prepared limestone fragments, steel balls, and a soapy solution. A final step may include similar treatment with a mixture of steel balls with soapy water.
