A method of making girdles on precious stones comprises bringing two stones into rotation and working them against each other with the peripheral edges of their tables, the axes of rotation crossing each other. In a machine for carrying out the method in which both a stone and a polishing disc rotate with their axes crossing at right angles, the polishing disc is replaced by a pair of dops for holding a second stone. With the stones rotating, the edges of the tables of the stones are brought into engagement so that girdles are formed on the stones. When one of the stones is reduced to its correct size as determined by a stroboscope, it is removed and replaced with a further stone until the second stone is reduced to its correct size and replaced, the operation continuing to form the girdle on the further stone, and so on. The axes of the stones may be held axially stationary to form hollow profiles on the girdles, or be reciprocated to form straight profiles.
