Abstract

<PICT:0573018/IV/1> In reversible dehydrogenation reactions, particularly of hydrocarbons, the hydrogen set free is removed by diffusion through a porous septum. The invention is particularly applicable to the conversion of butane into butylene, of butylene p into butadiene, of ethylbenzene into styrene, the combination of ethylene and benzene to form styrene and hydrogen &c. Specifications 572,821 and 576,416 are referred to. The apparatus may comprise a porous tube b filled with catalyst through which the reactants are circulated from a reservoir r, and an outer tube a into which the hydrogen diffuses. To ensure rapid removal of the hydrogen and to minimise diffusion of the hydrocarbon, an inert vapour of high molecular weight, such as benzene is circulated through the tube a in counter-current to the flow in the catalyst tube.
