Abstract

<PICT:0765025/IV(b)/1> In dehydrogenating hydrocarbons in the presence of superheated steam with the aid of a furnace having tubes containing a dehydrogenation catalyst and kept by external heating at the requisite dehydrogenation temperature, the temperature is maintained substantially uniform over the whole catalyst region by preheating the hydrocarbon and mixing it, shortly before its entry into the furnace, with sufficient superheated steam to produce the dehydrogenating temperature, passing the mixture through a layer of the dehydrogenation catalyst situated above the tubes, and then passing the mixture into the tubes at the moment when the heat content of the mixture is no longer sufficient for the dehydrogenation. In the apparatus of Fig. 2, for the 38-39 per cent conversion of ethylbenzene to styrene, furnace tubes 2 are filled with a catalyst consisting of ferric, magnesium, copper, and potassium oxides and there is a layer 6 of this catalyst above the tubes; a mixture of ethylbenzene vapour and steam in the ratio by weight 1:1.3, introduced at a, is preheated to 579 DEG C., and the reaction mixture leaving the tubes at c is at 588 DEG C.
