Abstract
572,801. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metals. SEELEY, E. A., and MUREX, Ltd. Jan. 24, 1942, No. 1026. [Class 82 (i)] Shaped metal articles are made by moulding tinder pressure at a raised temperature a metal powder mixed with a thermosetting resinous composition, which may be a phenolic or ureaformaldehyde resin, and subsequently heating to drive off the resinous composition and sinter the metal powder. The metal powder may include hard carbides such as tungsten or other carbides, and an iron group metal, and the proportion of resin in the mixture may be about 3 per cent of the weight of the metal powder. The mixture may be made into a paste with a solvent and thereafter dried, ground, and screened. The heating to drive off the resin is conducted in hydrogen and at a rate of temperature increase preferably not exceeding 35‹ C. per hour, and the subsequent sintering may be conducted in one stage or in two stages.
