Abstract

[Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] In an adjustable mounting for aircraft guns comprising front and rear supports, the front support is carried by a tubular housing connected between the supports to the aircraft by a joint affording limited angular universal adjustment of the housing and adapted to be locked in a selected setting whereby the gun may be removed for cleaning &c. and replaced without disturbing the setting. As shown, the front support comprises a part spherical number 7 held by a screwed radiused ring 10 against a radiused annular seating 8 in the front-end of a housing 4 and preferably formed with a cylindrical extension 11 to receive an enlargement 12 on the gun barrel 3 to act as a damper against the recoil spring 13. The ring 10 is locked in position by a spring-pressed plunger cooperating with notches in the edge of the housing and is slackened before adjusting the gun. The rear support 2 is formed with guides along which the gun can slide during recoil and affords limited angular adjustment about vertical and horizontal axes. The housing 4 is connected to a fixture 14 on a spar &c. of an aeroplane wing 6 by a joint comprising two rotatable rings 16, 17, with opposed inclined abutting faces clamped by bolts 19 between flanges 4a, 14a, bolts 24 with compression springs 25 being also provided to take the weight of the barrel and housing when the bolts 19 are slackened for rotating the rings to adjust the setting. The opposed faces of the rings and flanges may be radially serrated to provide a position lock. A slightly flexible fairing may enclose the bolts 24 and the fixture 14.
