Abstract
5 7 6 ,0 2 6. Aerial camera and bombsight mounts. ROBINSON, C. S. Aug. 4, 1943, No. 12586. Convention date, March 23, 1942. [Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] An aerial camera or bombsight mount comprises a primary pair of gimbals having their axes fixed parallel to the longitudinal and transverse axes of the aeroplane and a secondary pair of gimbals having their axes transverse to each other, to one of which the camera or bombsight is attached, the secondary pair of gimbals being rotatably mounted on the first pair for rotation in azimuth relative thereto so that the axes of the secondary gimbals may be set parallel and transverse to the direction of flight relative to the ground when flying in crosswinds and the primary levelling may be set on axes co-ordinated to the principal axes of the aeroplane. The secondary gimbals may have resilient axes transverse to each other. As shown, a main frame 7 is secured to the aeroplane floor 2 by feet 6, and carries pivots 9 supporting a gimbal ring 10, which itself carries pivots 11 supporting a gimbal ring 12. A ring 14, rotatable in ring 12, carries a rack 14<1> which drives the view-finder 3 carried by ring 12 through a pinion, a worm 16, and a worm-wheel 17 by the same angular amount as the camera 1. The ring 14 has flanges supporting resilient pivot cushions, e.g. of sponge rubber, on top of which are flanges of the gimbal ring 18 and also supplementary resilient cushions 19, bolts fixed to the flanges of ring 14 passing through the cushions and carrying adjusting nuts 21 pressing on plates 22. The ring 18 carries similar resilient pivots supporting brackets 30 in which the camera trunnions are clamped. The resilient pivots permit temporary manual adjustment of the camera, which returns to the central position of release. Cams 32 rotatable by hand grips 36 are attached to the gimbal ring 10 and bear on the stationary main frame 7 and are held set by spring-pressed friction brake shoes 37. On turning the cams 32, connected by shaft 34, the gimbal 10 can be set for continued deviation from horizontal of the longitudinal axis of the aeroplane. A similar cam 33 controls the gimbal 12. Stainless steel springs are inserted between gimbal 12 and ring 14 to control the movement of the latter. Clamps are described for the camera trunnions and for the nose or barrel when so held.
