Abstract

572,182. Bearings ; lubricating. TECALEMIT, Ltd., and LE CLAIR, C. C. S. Nov. 17, 1943, No. 19218. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a lubricated shaft bearing, excess of oil is removed by a porous wiper or collector connected to a suction source. The wiper may consist of a ring or plug of porous metal or of non-metallic material such as felt, asbestos, or fibre, and is pressed by one or more springs into close contact with the shaft. Similar wipers connected to oil under pressure may be used to supply oil to the bearing. The shaft 1, Fig. 1, turns in bushes 2, 2A which enclose an annular carrier 5 for a porous metal ring 6 made in two or more segments pressed by a garter spring 7 and connected to an oil-supply pipe 8A. Carriers 13, 14 are pressed by springs against the flanged outer ends of the bushes and contain porous metal rings 15, 16 with spring rings 17, 18, the rings being connected by pipes 19A, 20A to a suction source. The carriers may be in segments. The wiper may consist of a porous plug 23, Fig. 2, fixed in a carrier 24 and pressed by a leaf spring 25. In a modification, Fig. 5, a porous metal plug 40 is soldered into a carrier 41 which slides within a housing 42 under the action of one or more springs 46, the capillary feed pipe 44 being coiled to serve as a spring. The porous plug may be pre-formed in situ.
