Abstract
571,964. Snap-action switches. SMART & BROWN (ENGINEERS), Ltd., and SONNENFELD, H. Dec. 22, 1943, No. 21479. [Class 38 (v)] A snap-action switch comprises a conducting roller 1 (or ball) which, in the closed position shown, bridges two spring contacts 2. An upward movement of the handle 10 rolls the roller over the shaped surface 3 until, when it reaches the peak and the contacts are about to separate, the spring 5 is fully compressed. A slight further push unloads the spring 5 and the roller 1 rapidly rolls onto an " off " stop 7 of cork or rubber. In Fig. 2 the surface 3 is on a member 16 freely pivoted at 17. In another modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the roller is rigid with the handle and the snap-action is obtained from a movable track mounted on one or a pair of springs. The trunnions 13, forming the pivotal mounting for handle 10 engage grooves 14 in the removable face plate 12. Self-cleaning of the roller 1 is obtained from abrasive material arranged on the track or so as to contact the roller in the " off position. The line of the peak may be slightly out of the parallel, so as to present " faltering" at that point of the movement.
