571,901. Reinforced concrete. PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE CO., Ltd., and MAUTNER, K. W. Dec. 30, 1943, No. 21832. [Class 20 (iv)] A method of making pre-stressed concrete elements consists in stretching high grade tensile wires, casting the concrete around the stretched wires, and subsequently releasing the wires gradually and intermittently in several stages during the hardening period with time intervals between each releasing operation. It is stated that by this method it is possible to secure adequate compressive as well as bond strength in a shorter time than if the wires are released in one operation. In one example wires of 40 feet in length and so stretched that they will shorten by 6 inches in the finished article are released to shorten by ¢ inch after three days hardening of the concrete. A further 1 inch shortening is allowed on the fourth day, another 1¥ inches on the fifth day, and the remaining shortening permitted on the sixth or seventh day.
