Abstract

571,710. Gas purifier valves. DEMPSTER, Ltd., R. & J., SHEERAN, A. J., and SAVAGE, W. A. Sept. 23, 1943, No. 15645. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] Each of the six main valves of an absorption filter plant for recovering benzol from retort or still gases is operated by a diaphragm actuated by pressure fluid controlled by a pilot valve which is actuated from an operating shaft driven from a slow-motion shaft, the arrangement being such that, during each quarterrevolution of the operating shaft, the pilot valve is first rotated through a small angle at slow speed and for the remainder of the quarterrevolution, at high speed due to the temporary coupling of the operating shaft to a high-speed shaft, the pilot valve thereafter being stationary until the drive of the slow-motion shaft is resumed. The fluid-pressure diaphragm is controlled by a rotary plug valve 10, Fig. 1, actuated from a shaft 14 through bevel gears 13. Loosely mounted on the shaft 14 is a wheel 16 carrying four spaced sets of teeth 161 and driven by a dog 25 which engages between the spokes of the wheel 16. The dog 25 is carried by a worm-wheel 23 driven by a slowly rotating worm 22. When one of the sets of teeth 161 reaches and engages a pinion 19 driven from a fast-motion shaft 21, the wheel 16 is spun quickly and this movement is transmitted from the diametrically opposite set of teeth 161 through pinion 17 and. gearing 182, 181 to the shaft 14, and the movement of the latter actuates the valves 10. In a modification, the shaft 14, Fig. 4, carries a ratchet wheel 30 which has a lost-motion connection with the slowly rotating worm-wheel 23 through a dog clutch 38, 39. The fast-motion shaft 21 actuates an oscillating pusher 33 which normally moves between one of the curved surfaces 301 of the ratchet wheel and a guide 36. When one of the recesses 31 is presented to the pusher, the ratchet wheel is given a quick movement which actuates the valves.
