571,554. Cylinders. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. May 8, 1944, No. 8652. Convention date, May 8, 1943. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A valve guide assembly for removing the carbon from the portion of the valve stem which enters the guide, consists of a tubular metal guide 14 having an internal annular groove 22 and a plurality of longitudinal slots 24 extending back from the end to divide the, grooved. portion into a plurality of individual resilient legs 26, and a scraper ring 15 preferably of a hard refractory material having an external annular flange 19 received in groove 22, whereby the guide and scraper ring are looked together. The scraper ring has a tapered conical face 18 to produce springing of the resilient legs 26 during assembly. The re fractory material used is a mixture of molybdunum (55-65 per cent) and silver (45-35 per cent). Although other materials, viz. tungsten or the carbides of tungsten, molybdenum, titanium and tantalum in combination with silver are also said to be suitable.
