571,542. Making projectiles. PLATERS & STAMPERS, Ltd. July 5, 1943, No. 10886. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1942. [Class 83 (ii)] A hollow high-explosive shell 10 is made by cold-working, i.e. below recrystalliza,tion temporature, a steel blank 10a, Fig. 2, in a series of cupping and drawing operations so that the grain in the side walls is at right angles to that in the bottom and fragmentation is improved. Figs. 2 and 3 show the desired steps, and after the fifth step only the blank 10f is annealed at 1425-1450‹ F. in a gas muffle furnace. The blank may also be trimmed after the fifth and after the final step. The final cupped blank is then finished by cleaning, machining, &c.
