142,148. Hadfield, Sir R. A., and Jack, A. G. M. April 25, 1919. Projectiles.-In order to work the metal of shells more effectively, these are compressed axially after piercing. A solid heated blank a is forced by a plunger c into a die b pierced by a punch d and then compressed by the die f to increase the thickness of the walls from g to h. If desired the cavity i may be enlarged or rectified by a second punch k<1> which may be separate from, fixed to, or sliding in, the die f as shown in Fig. 5. The tools may be carried as shown in Fig. 1. by a transversely movable slide on the ram m. The shell may be removed from the die during the process for reheating if necessary. The cavity i is finished by machining.
