Abstract

102,898. Bean, J. H., and Holmes, T. E. Aug. 4, 1916. Cupped articles.-Projectiles, such as shrapnel shells, which are closed at one end and have an internally tapered wall, are made by (1) drawing through dies e a billet a having a cylindrical cavity g, by means of a tapered punch f, the maximum effective diameter of which is greater than the diameter of the cavity g; (2) arresting the billet by a block h after it has cleared the die and during the advance of the punch to the bottom of the cavity; and (3) finally drawing the work through the same or similar dies by means of the same or a similar punch. The cavity g may be produced by piercing the billet in a piercing pot by means of a cylindrical punch. Apparatus for performing the invention may consist of an hydraulic press provided with a horizontal slide 16, on which are mounted a piercing pot 17 and a drawing stool 18 adapted to be brought in turn under a ram by an hydraulic ram 20. The extractor 21 of the pot 17 is actuated by a rod 22 operated by an hydraulic ram. The piercing and drawing punches are carried by a slide 28 adapted to be moved in a direction at right-angles to the direction of movement of the slide 16. The presshead 26 carries adjustable contact-pieces 29, which, by encountering stops 30 on the pot 17 or stops 31 on the stool 18, limit the descent of the piercing or drawing punch.
