571,522. Typewriters. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H., and EVANS, A. Jan. 14, 1944, No. 782. [Class 100 (iv)] . An attachment for the positive feeding of marginally-apertured stationery through a tabulating, typewriter or other writing machine as an alternative to the normal platen-and-rollers friction feed, comprises an open framework 22, 23 providing bearings for a pin-wheel spindle 15 parallel with and above the platen 11 and a gear train or chain-drive for actuating the spindle 15 from the platen shaft 14,the gear train &c. being mounted on one side of the framework and including an element coaxial with and adapted to be keyed to the platen shaft. As shown, the gear-train 28 ... 30 is carried by a plate 27 mounted on one side of the frame 22,23 by means of rods 26 and the shaft of the element 29 is formed with a key 33 for engagement with a key-way 32 in a head 31 on the shaft 14, the head 31 replacing the usual hand-knob. A locking-device 34 prevents disengagement of the parts 31, 32. The pin-wheel shaft 15 has a key-way 17 or a series of serrations constituted, for example, by a helical thread and each pin-wheel 16 has a spring-controlled hinged claw to lock it in adjusted position along the spindle. A series of paper-supporting discs 20 are loosely mounted on the shaft 15 and spaced apart by light springs 21. When the pin-wheel feed is employed, the friction rollers are moved to inoperative position. Specification 452,808 is referred to.
