Abstract

571,085. Cavity walls. NEWMAN, B. L Nov. 2, 1943, No. 18117. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] The cavity wall of a building is formed by the pre-cast pillars 13, 14 and slabs 2, the slabs being spaced and interlocked with the pillars which are formed in sections 1 having a central bore 4 through which liquid cement or grouting 5 is made to flow, means such as tubes 7 being provided in the pillars to permit of the passage and free circulation of air within the cavities of the wall. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, the bore 4 is enlarged at 6 for the reception of an increased section of grouting to embrace the centre portion of the tube 7, and the tube is located in the circular hole provided by semicircular recesses in the edges of two of the sections 1. The tubes are preferably of asbestos-cement. The slabs 2, which are of light concrete, clinker concrete, or thermo plastic material, have nosings 11 which engage in recesses 12 of the pillars. As shown in Fig. 5 the disposition of the recesses 12 and of the tubes 7 depend on the location of the pillar in the wall. In the case of intermediate pillars 18, such as would be employed in the building of bays, vertical grooves 20, 21, are formed in the contiguous faces of adjacent pillars for the reception of grouting 22. In a modification the slabs have vertical ribs on their inner faces near their ends, which ribs abut against each other when in position. Lateral grooves in the ribs permit the passage of the air. For factory and workshop structures the rods may extend across the corner of the building from one pillar to another, each tie rod having its ends down to engage the holes 4 of the wall pillars and being connected at its centre to a further tie rod having its other end similarly secured to the pillar at the corner.
