Abstract
570,720. Making compound bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., and BATE, J. Jan. 14, 1944, No. 768. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Flanging.-A flanged half-bearing, Fig. 7, is made by bending a bimetal blank into U-shape 30, Figs. 1, 2, operating on this by a press which acts on the arms A and then on the curve to produce a, preliminary flange 31a, Fig. 4, treating the part of the blank stretched in the last operation to reduce the strain, and finally acting on the blank to complete the flange. The blank 30 may be placed on support 13 of the same form and die 15, having the same form 20 and outwardly splayed ends 22, is brought down on the blank moving this and its support down so that the projecting ends 31 are pressed up by dies 14 till they conform to the ends 22. Ribs 29 on the dies 14 also act on the blank to form grooves 32 therein, thus reducing the strain. Instead of using ribs 29, the metal at the bend may be rolled or made to flow by a blow or by pressure. The blank is stripped from the die 15 by pads 17 on a frame 16 supported on pillars 18 by springs 33. Specifications 442,468 and 454,771 are referred to.
