Abstract

574,966. Making cartridge cases. STEVENS, C. H. Sept. 20, 1940, No. 14416. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Stamping.-Steel cartridge cases are made, from blanks formed into tubes by bending and welding, by expanding in dies by internallyapplied fluid pressure. One end may be partly closed by spinning or pressing prior to the shaping operation to form a blank such as is shown in Fig. 5, which is placed in a die 1 and its ends are closed by rubber pads 9 carried by holders 10 pressed outwardly by a spring on a tube 11 perforated for the supply of fluid pressure controlled at 6. The die is closed by a member 2 secured bv bolts. Vents for escape of air are provided at 13, 14 and 16. In a modification, the upper part of the die is carried by a balanced lever and is clamped by a screw in a swinging yoke also counterbalanced.
