Abstract

523,948. Making corrugated tubes; stamping. KIRKE, P. St. G. Jan. 17, 1939, Nos. 1714/40 (Divided out of 519,593) and 1712/40. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Multiwave tubes as described in Specifications 388,227, 399,203 and 400,252, [all in Group XIII], are produced in dies by the direct application of internal fluid pressure. A tube 26 to be waved is enclosed between dies 10, 11 that may be hinged and closed hydraulically or through toggle mechanism prior to or at the same time as pressure fluid is admitted to the interior. For this purpose one end is closed by a plug 22 restrained by a detent 13 and the other by a plug 23 with detent 16. The plug 23 is hollow to admit the fluid which may act on the tube through a rubber tube 24 clamped in the plug 23 by a conical portion 25 of a tube 18 which may extend as a stiffener within the rubber tube. The clamping is effected by a gland 19 with lock nut 21. If the tubes have specially formed or expanded ends the plugs are shaped to fit these ends. In a modification the ends of the tube are closed by discs provided with cup leathers and connected by a tie-rod which may be wholly or in part hollow for the admission of pressure fluid. When hot pressing is employed the tube is filled with steam or other elastic fluid under pressure. In a further modification the tube is held on a base 39, formed to act as the lower die, by hinged members 31, 32. The member 32 has a yoke 36 that acts as an abutment for a plug 35 bored at 44 and fitted with an annular cup leather 43. The other end is plugged by a similarly packed member 37 held in place by a pin 40, and ported to admit fluid at 49, 48. The port 44 connects with the tube by a branch 46 to secure the expulsion of all air on admitting fluid at 49. When the tube is filled the pipe 45 is closed by a cock. The fluid may simply act as a filling or may be admitted at any pressure up to 1500 1b. per square inch during the waving the pressure being finally increased to 4500 1b. per square inch to remove any deformations.
