Abstract

570,377. Pile fabrics ; looms. PICKING, W. T. May 22, 1943, No. 8157. [Classes 142 (ii) and 142 (iv)] A pile fabric is made upon a loom having longitudinal pile wires 39, healds 43 for raising and lowering the pile warps 32 and additional reeds 69, 70 for moving the pile warps laterally so that they are looped over the wires 39. The pile warps are raised, looped over the wires and lowered again during one complete forward and backward movement of the beat-up reed 31. The binding warps 34 are raised and lowered for forming a shed by healds 45 and the stuffer warps 33 pass through eyes 46 in wires 47. The wefts may be inserted by reciprocating needles, the travel of which can be adjusted, or shuttles may be used. In one arrangement the forward reed 69 is stationary and is provided with wires 72, the lower parts of which are cranked, and the rearward reed 70 is mounted for lateral movement. Alternatively each of the reeds 69, 70 may be stationary, and the reed wires are cranked at their upper ends as well as at their lower ends. In yet another arrangement, the wires of the reed 69 are cranked at their lower ends and the wires of the reed 70 are cranked at their upper ends, and the reed 70 is movable vertically. A knife 41 is mounted upon each wire for cutting the pile loops. Pile warps of different colours may be used for patterning purposes, the warps being selected by jacquard or similar mechanism. A pile fabric as shown in Fig. 12 may be produced, in which the pile loops 32 are formed during each beat-up of the reed, the pile warps being held by upper wefts to form a two-shot fabric. Alternatively the pile loops may be formed during each alternate beat-up to form three- or four-shot fabrics ; the pile loops may be formed either at the beat-up when the shed is changed or at the beat-up occurring with no change of shed.
