Abstract

570,094. Thermionic relay circuits; code telegraphy. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and STYLES, L. C. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18708. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A thermionic switching arrangement comprises in series between the positive and negative terminals of a source, a hard vacuum valve and a gas filled valve, each grid controlled, together with means to apply potentials to both valves to render the gas-filled valve conductive and means including the hard vacuum, valve for rendering the gas-filled valve non- conductive. The Figure shows an arrangement in which the anode of the hard valve 1 is connected to the positive terminal and the cathode of the gas-filled valve 2 is connected to the negative terminal each connection including an impedance 3, 4. In this arrangement control is effected by applying negative spacing signals to the grid of the hard valve and positive marking signals to the grid of the grid controlled valve 2. As shown, the arrangement is applied to a telegraph relay system responsive to mark and space signals received over two different input terminals and is adapted to convert these signals to on-off signals in a single output channel. As shown, direct-current amplifiers 10, 11 precede the switching valves 1, 2. In this arrangement both mark and space signals are positive pulses, and phase reversing valve 12 is included in the marking channel. The output may be taken from the cathode resistance 4 in the form of positive pulses or from the resistance 3 in the form of negative pulses.
