Abstract
570,037. Explosives. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, (Hercules Powder Co.). Oct. 3, 1939, No. 27126. [Class 9 (ii)] Smokeless-powder grains are coated with a water-soluble deterrent substance, either in the form of an aqueous solution, or by adding the deterrent substance to wetted powder grains and mixing. When a solution is employed, it may be only sufficient to moisten the grains, or added in excess with subsequent removal of the surplus. The treated grains are finally dried to remove the moisture therefrom. In one example, two parts by weight of a 15 per cent nitroglycerine powder were wetted with 10 per cent by weight of water and 2.5 parts by weight of glycerol diacetate added. The mixture was revolved in a tumbler barrel for 15 minutes at 35‹ C., then for 15 minutes at 55‹ C., removed, and dried for 40 hours at 55‹ C. In a second example, one part by weight of a 20 per cent nitroglycerine powder was treated with 160 parts by weight of a 3.5 per cent solution of methyl cellosolve adipate, warmed slowly to 90‹ C., kept at this temperature for one hour, and dried for three days at 55‹ C.
