Abstract

569,951. Water-tube steam boilers; steam superheaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Sept. 1, 1943, No. 14259. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1942. [Classes 123 (ii) and 123 (iii)] [Also in Group XII] In the recovery of chemicals and heat from waste liquors, such as the residual liquors in the sulphate and soda processes of manufacturing pulp, by spraying them into a furnace chamber where they are dehydrated and solid combustible material containing chemicals is deposited on the bottom of the furnace, the combustion of the material is effected by supplying primary air below the upper surface thereof. Secondary and tertiary air supplies are delivered to the furnace above the surface of the fuel bed. The liquor is delivered into the furnace chamber 10 by spray nozzles 30, as described in Specification 475,416 [Group XII], and is subjected to the heat of the gases rising from the fuel bed resting in the inclined base 19. A fan 32 delivers air over a steam heated air heater 35 into a conduit 36 and wind boxes adjacent the rear and side walls of the furnace from which it passes through damper controlled ports 44, 50 below and above the surface of the bed of solid combustible material on the base 19. A tapping outlet 31 for the smelted material is arranged in the front wall of the furnace. Above the spray nozzles 30 air supply ports 58 deliver air to the gases from a fan 55. The walls and base of the furnace are lined with water tubes in communication with upper and lower drums 71, 72 of a water tube boiler over which the gases from the furnace finally pass after being directed by baffles 60, 75 over vertical rows of water tubes 67 and steam superheated tubes 80, 81. Any solid matter in the gases passing over the superheater tubes is deposited in a receptacle 95 and returned to the furnace by pipes 96. The baffles 60, 75 are formed by studded water-tubes 22, 173, Figs. 6 and 8, the spaces between which are filled in with refractory material. Brackets 84 welded to the tubes 22 and bars 86 welded to the tubes 173 provide supports for hook shaped lugs 83, 85 on the superheater tubes and permit expansion thereof. Specification 544,587, [Group XII], alsa is referred to.
