This invention relates to a steam boiler in which means are provlded for protecting the walls of the furnace or combustion chamber,
and will be understood from the description 5 in connection wlth the accompanylng drawtake headers 9 and 10, that are connected steam and water inlet pipe, convenient to the steam and water drum 6 by nipples 11 and circulating tubes 12. A superheater 13 may be located below the bank of tubes 7, and connected to the steam space of the drum by a pipe, not shown.
It row of vertically disposed tubes 15 is located along the inside of the rear wall of the furnace, and the upper and lower ends of these tubes extend outwardly through the furnace wall. The upper ends of the tubes 15 are connected to the steam space of a steam and water drum 16, and the lower ends are connected to a horizontal header 17 located outside oi the furnace. A downtake tube 18 connects the lower portion or water space of the drum 16 to a horizontal header 19 located. in front of the front wall of the furnace, the tube 18 being located entirel" outside of the furnace. A row of inclined slag screen tubes 20 connects the headers 17 and 19 and tube 21 connects the steam space or" the drum 16 to the steam space of the main boiler. A feed water inlet pipe 22 is connected to the drum 16 and a feed water not shown, is connected to any part of the main boiler. The feed water inlet 22 to the steam and water drum 16 may be provided with means to maintain the desired water level in the drum 16, which is independent of the water level that is maintained in the main boiler,

One or more rows of tubes 25 extend from the steam space of the drum 16, across the upper portion oi'the furnace 5 and are connected to headers 26. A tube 27 outside of the furnace connects the water space of the drum 16 to a header or distributor 28 that is connected by means of the nipples 29 to the lower ends of the headers 26.
In the operation of this invention, steam is generated in the main boiler in the usual manner. At the same time feed water is introduced into the steam and water drum 16 and passes downwardly through the pipe '18 into the header 19, thence through the tubes 20 where it is heated and some steam is generated therein, the mixture of steam and water passing into the header 17 and thence upwardly through the wall cooling tubes 15 where more steam is generated, the mixture passing into the steam and water drum, where the steam and water are separated, the water collecting in the drum and the steam passing through the pipe 21 into the steam space of the main boiler.
In addition to steam being generated in the main boiler and in the slag screen tubes 20 and furnace wall cooling tubes 15, steam is also generated in the tubes 25 and passes into the drum 16, the tubes 25 being fed by water that passes through the tubes 27 and thence into the headers 26.
The circulation of water through the tubes 15 and 20 and the generation ofsteam in this system of tubes is entirely independent of the generation of steam or circulation of water in the main boiler. Likewise, the circulation through the tubes 25 and 27 and the generation of steam in the tubes 25 is independent both of the main boiler and the system comprising the tubes 15 and 20. The added heating surface afforded by the tubes 25 renders the boiler more effective for steam generation. The steam generated in the main boiler and that generated in the other tubes may, of course, be joined and used for a common purpose, or the main and auxiliary systems of steam generation may be separated by removing the connecting tube 21 and steam at different pressures may be generated in the two portions and used for different purposes.
The invention has been illustrated in connection with a powdered fuel furnace. The fuel burners may be located in the front wall of the furnace or in the horizontal portion 30 of the front wall.
I claim:
1. In combination, a furnace, a main boiler heated from said furnace and comprising a steam and water drum, a second boiler comprising a steam and water drum disposed outside the furnace, tubes extending in a vertical direction along the inside of a wall of the furnace, connections from the upper ends of said tubes to the steam space of said second drum, inclined. tubes extending across the bottom of tne furnace and connected at one end to said wall tubes and at the other end to the wat r space of said second drum, a con nection between the steam spaces only of said drums, and inclined tubes eztending trans versely of the furnace adjacent its top and connected to said second drum for water circulation.
2. In a steam power installation, a furnace, a primary water tube boiler located above the furnace and heated mainly by heat which is convection transmitted from gases proceeding from the furnace, a steam and water drum constituting; a part of the primary boiler, a
- secondary boiler mainly affected by heat radiantly transmitted from fuel burning in the furnace and having a water circulation which is independent of the water circulation of the primary boiler, a steam and water drum for the secondary boiler separate from the first drum, a connection between the steam spaces only of said drums, a row of inclined water tubes extending across the top of the furnace as to screen the primary boiler against the radiant heat of the furnace and connected to the second drum, furnace wall tubes constituting a part of the second boiler and connected to the steam and water drum for the secondary boiler, and means for connecting the inclined tubes and the Wall tubes with the water space of the second drum. N
3. In combination, a furnace, a main boiler including a bank of tubes heated mainly by heat convection transmitter from said furnace, a steam and water drum forming a part of the main boiler, a second boiler mainly heated by radiantly transmitted heat and including a steam and water drum disposed outside the furnace tubes extendin in a vertical direction along a wall of the furnace and having their upper ends in communication with the second drum, connections between the lower ends of said wall tubes and the second drum below its Water level, a connection between the steam spaces only of said drums, and inclined tubes extending transversely of the furnace adjacent its top and connected to said second drum for water circulation, the main and second boilers having assen independent water circulations with independent water levels so that feed waters of different degrees of purity may be used in the respective boilers.
4. In a steam power installation, a furnace, a primary water tube boiler having a bank of tubes located above the furnace and heated mainly by heat convection transmitted from gases proceeding from the furnace, a steam and Water drum constituting a part of the primary boiler, a secondary boile-r'mainly af* fected by heat radiantly transmitted from fuel burning in the furnace and having a water circulation which is independent of the water circulation of the primary boiler, a
steam and water drum for the secondary boiler separate from the first drum, a connection be ween the steam spaces only of said drums, a row of inclined water tubes extending across the top of the furnace so as to screen the primary boiler against the radiant heat of the furnace and connected to thesecond drum, a superheater interposed relative to the inclined tubes and said bank of tubes, furnace wall tubes constituting a part of the second boiler, and means for connecting the inclined tubes and the wall tubes with the Water space of the second drum, the wall tubes constituting a part of a first circulation circuit including the second drum, whil the inclined tubes constitute a part of a separate circulation circuit including the same drum.
5. In a steam generating system, a firs steam boiler including a furnace, a row of steam generating tubes arranged along a wall of the furnace, a steam and water drum located oxteriorly of the furnace near the top thereof to which said Wall tubes are connected, inclined steam generating tubes extending across the path of the furnace gases moving from the furnace and connected so as to discharge into the steam and water drum, and means connnunicating with the water space of the steam and water drum and the lower ends of said tubes to supply water thereto, a second boiler including a bank of convection heated steam generating tubes extending across the path of the gases beyond said first mentioned inclined tubes, a steam and Water drum receiving the steam developed in said bank of tubes and arranged withoutconnection below its water level to the first steam and water drum so as to have a water level independent of the water level of the first drum, and a connection leading from the steam space of the first steam and water drum to the steam space of the second, J OHAN N KULLING.
