Abstract

569,503. Building construction. FINDLAY, G. K. May 10, 1943, No. 7372. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] A building comprises a number of hollow columns 1 of steel, concrete, or other moulded material, of hexagonal section vertically divided and bolted together, or alternatively of solid form. The walls are formed of concrete slabs or tiles on both sides of the columns, each slab having hollow spaces 8, and ridges 9 to engage an adjacent slab. The spaces 11 may be filled with waterproofing medium. The slabs or panels are secured against the columns by ties having flanged ends 12 and a turnbuckle 14, which are engaged with the panels by passing through slots 13. Access of moisture to the hollow wall at the vertical joints is prevented by a compressible strip 15, between the column 1 and wall 5, and a folded strip of bituminous felt 17 may be placed between adjacent panels, with mastic material 19 at the outer surface. A moulded skirting 21 may be used at the foot of the wall, with plaster rendering 22 above. In Fig. 4 the wall panel may have passages 30 and the ties 12 may engage the edges of adjacent panels. In an alternative form of wall tie, Fig. 5 (not shown), the turnbuckle 14 is omitted and the tie is tightened by bending the central part to V-shape.
