Abstract

568,991. Lubricating systems. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and ROWLEDGE, E. G. Feb.' 5, 1944, No. 2143. [Class 12 (iii)] The motor compressor of an hermeticallv sealed refrigerating-unit having a vertical crank-shaft is lubricated from a crank-shaft passage by both centrifugal and screw action. The crankshaft 13 has a passage 36, which may be inclined as shown or vertically fed by a multi-thread 30 and feeding by centrifugal action a passage 40 to the big-end bearing 42. Passage 36 also feeds a screw thread 38, the surplus oil from which overflows to an auxiliarv sump X and thence through a hole 43 to the piston 17 and main sump S. Some of the oil is also caught by the gudgeon pin 45. The sump S also collects oil separated from the incoming refrigerant vapour in the rectifying chamber 62. With high viscosity oil the screwing action predominates, whilst with low viscosity oil the centrifugal action predominates.
