[Class 97 (i)] A device for dividing a beam of light into two beams in different directions, e.g. at right angles to one another, comprises two solid transparent bodies of substantially the same refractive index, having closely adjacent faces separated from one another by a thin layer of transparent material of a different refractive index, the refractive indices and the angle between the surfaces and the incident beam being such that the major part of an incident beam is transmitted through both bodies while a relatively small part is reflected at the surfaces. One embodiment of the invention comprises two right-angled isosceles triangles of extra dense flint glass having their hypotenuse sides cemented by a thin layer of Canada balsam to form a cube. The major portion of a beam of light incident on the cube is transmitted undeviated, while about ¢ of one per cent is deflected in a direction at right angles to the incident beam. The reflecting layer may be a liquid, colloid or a thermosetting material and should preferably differ in refractive index from the transparent bodies by at least 0.1.
