Abstract

Fabric-covered aircraft components are made by stretching over an aircraft component or frame a fabric discontinuously coated with a cellulose derivative composition, and applying a solution of a cellulose derivative in an organic solvent which is also a solvent for the cellulose derivative in the discontinuous coating, thereby rendering the discontinuous coating continuous and tautening and shrinking the fabric around the component; The discontinuous coating is produced by applying to the fabric an aqueous emulsion of a cellulose derivative in which the disperse phase is a solution of the cellulose derivative in a water-immiscible solvent optionally containing a proportion of water or other non-solvent. The total proportion of water and other non-solvent is sufficient to outlast the volatile solvents during evaporation and the emulsion is substantially free from resin and wax. The aqueous emulsion may comprise a solution of cellulose nitrate in butyl alcohol, butyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, castor oil, and water emulsified in water containing small amounts of polyvinyl alcohol, isopropyl naphthalene sulphate, and petroleum naphtha, or a solution of cellulose nitrate and tricresyl phosphate in methyl ethyl ketone, toluol, and water emulsified in water with the aid of polyvinyl alcohol and isopropyl naphthalene sulphate. A fabric coated with the emulsion, dried and stretched over a frame, is shrunk and tautened by applying two or more coats of a composition containing nitrocellulose, castor oil, dibutyl phthalate, pigment, ethyl alcohol, methyl ethyl, ketone, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, butyl alcohol and petroleum naphtha. Ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, and mixed esters such as cellulose aceto-butyrate and cellulose acetopropionate may also be used as the cellulose derivative, and methyl isobutyl ketone as a solvent. The emulsion may contain a small proportion of an insolubilising agent such as stearato chromic chloride described in U.S.A. Specification 2,273,040. The fabric may be wetted with water before applying the emulsion and the dried emulsion coating may be polished by hot-calendering.
