4 Claims. (Cl. 106-171) and said surface coating forms a continuous,
flexible and glossy layer, under which the structure of said textile base material is not perceptible.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the examples showing certain preferred embodiments of my invention.
In the manufacture of artificial leather, such as patent leather, one or several base coatings comprising, for example, pyroxylin, castor oil and a pigment, are applied to a cotton cloth. To the base thus prepared, a surface coatingof a flexible lacquer, clear or pigmented or both of them, is applied in order to obtain a highly lustrous surface. The solvents present in the lacquers "hitherto used contain esters, ketones and ethers, and these solvents partly dissolve the 4 above mentioned nitrocellulose base coating.
Thereby the structure of the textile base is more or less exposed and consequently an undesirable shrinking of the luster occurs.
I have now found that this disadvantage can be avoided and artificial leather products of high lustre can be obtained if a textile base which has been provided in the usual manner with a pyroxylin coating and/or impregnation is coated by an alcohol-soluble nitrocellulose lacquer which contains a high amount of a plasticizing composition consisting of blown rapeseed oil or blown castor oil, and preferably of a mixture of these oils. As examples 'of carrying out my invention the following may be mentioned.
Example 1.-A cotton cloth is provided in the usual manner with a customary base coating which substantially consists of 60 parts by weight of pyroxylin solution, 25 parts by weight of castor oil, and parts by weight of a suitable plgment. The textile base ms obtained i coated with one or several coats of a lacquer comprising a, 15 parts b. w. of alcohol-soluble dry cellulose a lacquer which contains 15-30% nitrocellulose,
nitrate having a viscosity between 6-60" (SS- Hercules Powder brand), said cellulose nitrate being dissolved in 25 parts b. w. of denatured ethyl alcohol;
10 parts b. w. of a plasticizer; consisting of equal parts by weight of blown rapeseed oil and blown castor oil;
20 parts b. w. oftoluene;
15 parts b. w. of xylene;
5-15 parts b. w. of butyl alcohol.
Example 2.--A textilebase prepared as described in Example 1, is coated with one or sevseral layers .of a lacquer having the following composition:
20 parts b. w. of an alcohol soluble nitrocellulose having a viscosity of 5-6" and being dissolved in 25 parts b. W. of ethyl alcohol;
10 parts b. w. of toluene;
20 parts b. w. of benzene;
5-15 parts b. w. of butyl alcohol; a
10 parts b. w. of blown rapeseed oil, and 5 parts b. w. of blown castor oil.
Example 3.A cotton fabric base containin a base coating which consists of pyroxylin, fatty oil plastic'izer, and pigments, is coated with a surface lacquer comprising:
As shown in the above examples, the surface lacquer used according to this invention contains as film-forming material a nitrocellulose which is soluble in ethyl alcohol, and the solution of which can be homogeneously mixed with toluene, xylene, benzene, butyl alcohol or other solvents which do not affect the base coating. and which can be homogeneously mixed also with the above mentioned plasticizers. I- prefer to use in solution, and contain 7 to 15% 01 the above described plasticizers. The quantity or the plasticizing agent in my surface lacquers may vary between certain limits, I have found, however, that the lacquer should contain at least 6% of said plasticizers in order to obtain satisfactory results. The upper limit depends on the compatibility of the plasticizer and the other ingredients or the lacquer, and the required properties of the surface coating to be obtained, and lies between 15 and 20% calculated on the weight of the lacquer. v
I have further found that finishing of artificial leather products and the formation of a flexible surface coating, under which the underlying textile base material is not perceptible, may be efi'ected by using for the formation of said surface coating a lacquer which contains an alcohol-soluble nitrocellulose dissolved in a mixture of ethyl alcohol and other suitable solvents which do not afiect the base coating of the textile base material, and a non-oily plasticizer, such as tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate, adipic esters, which, in the amount in which it is present in the lacquer, substantially does not cause any undesired change of the textile base coating. The solvents used in such lacquers and the proportions 01 such solvents, are generally similar to those described in the above examples. As will be evident from the above description, the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment presented herein for illustration, and is susceptible of various modifications within the scope and spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A lacquer for finishing artificial leather products which contain a textile base material and a pyroxylin-containing base coating, said lacquer consisting of a cellulose nitrate which is soluble in ethyl alcohol, is dissolved in a mixture of ethyl alcohol with toluene, xylene, and butyl alcohol; and a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of blown rapeseed oil and blown castor oil, said lacquer being substantially inert to said base coating.
2. A lacquer for finishing artificial leather products which contain a textile base material and a pyroxylin-containing base coating, said lacquer consisting of a cellulose nitrate which is soluble in ethyl alcohol, is dissolved in a mixture of ethyl alcohol with toluene, benzene and butyl alcohol, and a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of blown rapeseed oil and blown castor oil, said lacquer being substantially inert to said base coating.
3. A lacquer for finishing artificial leather products which contain a textile base material and a pyroxylin-containing base coating, said lacquer consisting of a cellulose nitrate which is soluble in ethyl alcohol, is dissolved in a mixturev of ethyl alcohol with toluene and butyl alcohol, and a plasticizer selected from the group consisting of blown rapeseed oil and blown castor oil, said lacquer being substantially inert to said base coating.
4. A lacquer for finishing artificial leather products which contain a textile base material and a pyroxylin-containing base coating, said lacquer consisting of a cellulose nitrate which is soluble in ethyl alcohol, is dissolved in a solvent comprising as its main ingredient ethyl alcohol and also comprising a plasticizer consisting of a mixture of blown rapeseed oil and blown castor oil, said lacquer being substantially inert to said base coating.
