[Class 95] [Also in Group IV] A process of refinishing metallic surfaces having a weathered pigmented coating thereon comprises applying to the cleaned and smooth surface an intermediate film of a composition containing approximately equal parts of an alkyd resin, preferably oil-modified, and pyroxylin dissolved in a volatile solvent vehicle having the property of attacking the weathered pigmented coating, superficially drying, and thereafter applying an alkyd resin enamel free from pyroxylin and from active solvents for pyroxylin. In an example, the intermediate coating composition comprises nitrocellulose, a linseed oil-rosin-glyceryl phthalate resin, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil. carbon black, titanium dioxide. talc, denatured ethyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, n-butyl acetate, toluol and a petroleum diluent.
