Abstract

Pliable coated fabrics having a potential shrinkage and suitable for covering aircraft parts, drums and cinema screens are made by wetting the fabric with water, allowing it to shrink while wet, applying thereto a cellulose derivative aqueous emulsion of the water-in-oil type, drying the coated fabric, and stretching the fabric to its original dry width during or after drying. Alternatively, the emulsion may be applied to a dry, unshrunken fabric which is allowed to shrink while drying the emulsion and subsequently stretched to its original dry width. The stretching minutely fractures the dried coating. The emulsion consists of drops of water dispersed in a solution of the cellulose derivative in a volatile solvent and contains a proportion of plasticiser which is low in relation to the cellulose derivative. When applied to a wetted fabric it is forced, e.g. by a doctor knife into the interstices of the wet fabric. In use, the coated fabric is fitted or stretched over an aircraft part &c., and coated by brushing or spraying with a solution of a cellulose derivative in an organic solvent which dissolves the minutely fractured coating and shrinks the fabric. The emulsion may comprise cellulose nitrate dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, pigment, methyl ethyl ketone, and water, or cellulose aceto-butyrate or aceto-propionate triphenyl phosphate, methyl ethyl ketone, and water. A fabric coated with the emulsion, dried, and secured to an air frame is shrunk and tautened by applying a number of coats of a composition comprising cellulose nitrate, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, pigment, butyl and ethyl alcohol, butyl and ethyl acetate, petroleum naphtha. The dried emulsion coating may be polished by hot-calendering. The fabrics with the dried emulsion coating may also be used in tape form to cover seams or for reinforcing or finishing purposes on aircraft, being applied over a brushed-on coating of "dope."
