Abstract

In making a tubular filter cartridge, cellulosic fibres are pulped in a liquid containing between 85 and 75% by volume of a non-polar organic liquid, e.g. methyl or isopropyl alcohol or ethylene glycol, and between 15 and 25% of water, to form a pulp containing between 2 and 6% of fibres, computed on their dry weight, and the pulp is diluted with more liquid until it contains between 0,3 and 0,8% of fibres and is then vacuum-felted on a foraminous tubular former, e.g. by applying suction to the interior of the tubular former immersed in the diluted pulp. The cartridge is dried, preferably by withdrawing heated air through it from the outside to the inside. If necessary, its outer surface is trimmed. The cartridge is impregnated with a solution of a resin, as by withdrawing the solution through it from the outside to the inside. The resin solution may be a solution of melamine-, phenol- or ureaformaldehyde resin or polyvinyl chloride in aqueous isopropyl alcohol. Excess resin is removed from the cartridge by drawing warm air through it from the outside to the inside. The cartridge is then dried and cured by forcing hot air through it from the inside to the outside. Curing may be completed in an oven. The cured cartridge may be trimmed to a desired size. Specification 677,515 also is referred to.
