Abstract
In a process for the controlled modification of a web of polyurethane foam by treatment with caustic-alkali solution and subsequent removal of the caustic-alkali solution to obtain a substantially uniformly modified foam, the web impregnated with the caustic alkali solution and wound on a perforated drum rotatable about its longitudinal axis is subjected to the action of the caustic alkali solution to effect modification of the foam whilst rotating the drum slowly (preferably at 15 to 20 r.p.m.) about its longitudinal axis for a period of between about 30 minutes and about 2 hours and the caustic alkali solution is then washed out of the web by passing water into the drum whilst rotating the drum rapidly (preferably at 100 to 200 r.p.m.) so that the water is forced centrifugally through the perforations into the web and emerges on the outside of the wound-up web. A thin, non-elastic porous fabric may be wound on to the drum with the web so that successive layers of polyurethane foam web are held by successive layers of the fabric. The caustic alkali preferably has a strength of 8 to 30 DEG Be. The shorter times of treatment may be used when the treatment is effected at higher temperature, e.g. 60 DEG to 80 DEG C., as by blowing warm air into the housing of the revolving drum.
