Abstract

Textile cords for use in reinforcing rubber articles are treated with water which, upon evaporation, leaves substantially no residue, prior to treatment with a rubber-compatible adhesive which does not react with water, so that the adhesive is positioned only near the surface of the cord. The cords may be of viscose rayon, polyester or nylon and the adhesive may be resorcinol-formaldehyde or polymers containing 2-vinyl pyridine, styrene, isopropenyl ketone, butadiene, dimethyl-butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene, 1-cyano-butadiene-1,3 or mixtures of resorcinol formaldehyde with vinyl pyridine which may contain other olefinic compounds. After treating with adhesive the cords may be heated, with or without tension.
