Application filed June 9, 1920.
To all 10 how it may concern Be it known that I. Enooann FERNAND DAUTEUIL, a citizen of theFrench Republie, residing at Paris, in the French Republic, have invented new and useful Process and Apparatus for the Mechanical Cleaning and Smoothing of the Bellies of Bulls, Sheep, and other Similar Matters,. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mechanical process and apparatus for cleaning and smoothing the bellies of cattle suchas bulls or sheep.
It is well known that the cleansing and smoothing of these parts as well as the preparation of calves feet, pigs trotters and so on necessitates the use of important and experienced. assistance which considerably increases the cost of production of the prodnot which is intended for consumption.
The cleaning and smoothing or glazing of the bellies of bulls in particular constitutes a fairly delicate operation by reason of the lamelle between which all the impurities have to be withdrawn. The preparation of calves feet, pigs trotters, and sheep hoofs consists in taking away the claw or horn and of silk or material which covers them.
The present invention relates to a process and means for carrying out the same mechanically and rapidly in respect of all the operations above stated and with all desirable perfection.
The process consists essentially in placing the material or parts to be treated in one or more rotary cylindrical carriers or baskets consisting of blades mounted concentrically between two bottoms or longitudinal walls fitted internally with any kind of rugged material and then to subject such products on the one hand to the action of centrifugal force by rotating the whole of the baskets around a common axis, and on the other hand subjectingsame to the action caused by the rotary movement of each of the cylindrical baskets or drums on its respective axis.
The rotary movement of the whole arrangement on a common axis has for effect to project the products, under the influence of centrifugal force, against a portion of the internal walls of the drum which con tain them and the rotary movement of each of the cyllndrical drums on its respective axis has the effect of counteracting the Specification of Letters Yatcnt. yfltgntefi Jan, 1% 1922 Serial No. 387,794.
weight by causing the products to remain in contact with the surface against which they are thrown, this rotary movement of the drums having moreover, the effect of con stantl y changing the portion of this internal surface.
It is obvious that any mechanical means which will give the double rotary movement can be adopted according to the output desired and the space which can be allowed. v
The accompanying diagrammatical drawing shows, by way of example a manner of mounting an apparatus for carrying out the process herein referred to.
Figs. 1 and 2 are elevations taken at right angles to one another.
As it will be seen from the diagram, the drum or drums at in which the materials are introduced, can be mounted by their shafts a between two plates or between two circular fly wheels Z) mounted fast on a driving shaft 0 which latter can be driven by any appropriate means to give a rapid rotation 11011 it transmits to the two fly wheels 6 carrying the drums a with their charge which is by centrifugal action against the surface portion of the internal wall which is farthest from the axis of rotation c.
If, on the other hand there is given to one or other drum a rotary movement on its axis (L in the same direction'but slower than that of the fly wheels Z), such for eX- ample by mounting on each of these spindles a toothed wheel, meshing with a fixed central pinion wheel 7 disposed in the same rotary plane on the driving shaft, or by any other transmission means which will give the same result, the rotary movement of the drum on its spindle will carry along the products to be treated which will glide over the internal surface of the wall in a rolling manner, such surface being continuously changed by reason of the rotary movement which successively brings each consecutive portion of the internal periphery of the drums within the zone of contact.
The products, by rubbing against the slightly cutting or roughened walls against which they are thrown and in rolling over are thus cleaned or freed from their claws or horn clippings and the silk or surrounding matter, after the lapse of a few minutes in the rotary drums.
, The same treatment applied to the feet of sheep or pigs trotters frees them from their horn clippings and wool or silk which covers them. The residues are thrown by centrifugal force outside the drums in a space formed by a metal wall or partition surrounding the whole from whence they can be evacuated to the exterior by conduits branching ofi from the external Wall or through an opening provided in the base of the wall.
This base can, at the same time, receive a current of water or steam or air, for the purpose of facilitating and activating the cleaning operation.
It is to be understood that the essential elements in the means for carrying out the process will be fittedwith gratings or doors for access and with all the necessary accessories for insuring their normal working.
Finally the mechanical driving means may comprise an arrangement for automatically stopping the two rotary movements after the time required for the necessary operations has lapsed.
I claim:
1. A process for the mechanical cleaning and smoothing of the bellies of cattle and the preparation of calves feet, pigs trotters, and sheeps hoofs, which consists in subjecting the materials under treatment to two simultaneous rotary actions, whereby such material is thrown by centrifugal force, against the walls of the containing vessel and caused to roll and rub against the said walls.
2. Means for carrying out the process claimed in claim 1, comprising cylindrical drums containing the materials to be treated, walls for said drums constituted of slightly cutting lamelle or roughened material rotary shafts for said drums journalled in two fly wheels or circular plates, said fly wheels fixed to a central spindle, means for imparting rapid rotary movement to the fly wheels carrying the drums and means for imparting slower axial rotation to said drums inthe same direction as the ro tary movement of the fiy wheels.
