Abstract

367,771. Massage and skin treating apparatus. HOFFMANN, G., 62, Albrecht. strasse, S³dende, Berlin. Oct. 15, 1930, No. 30832. [Class 81 (ii).] A rapidly rotating paring device for the human skin has paring means, such as bristles, hairs, or fibres, which are mounted on a support so that they are inoperative in the proximity of the rotational axis and their ends execute a straight line or a circle of at least 2 mm. diameter on the skin, and which revolve at at least 300 revolutions per minute and move over the skin at a rate of 0À2 to 10 m. per second. Means are also provided for imparting a vibration to the parer. An electric motor 1 drives a skin parer 10 through reduction gear comprising a pinion 4 and a cap 6 of moulded insulating material rotatable on a journal 5. A spring 8 holds the cap 6 and pinion 4 out of engagement except when the parer 10 is pressed in the direction of the arrow 9. The parer is interchangeably mounted on the cap 6 and may be of roller form or, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, flat or mushroom shaped. The centre 22 is left free from bristles, or these are cut shorter for a distance of at least 1 mm. from the centre. In the mushroom construction, the bristles are arranged obliquely near the centre. A handle 16 for supporting the device is made integral with a screen 15 and carries a spring 18 fitted with a braking device 20 whereby the speed can be reduced to within the desired limits before the parer is applied to the skin. Since the armature is not exactly balanced but always exhibits a slight unbalanced mass defect, a vibration will be transmitted to the parer if this is rigidly connected to said armature. An unbalanced weight 3 may be fitted if desired. The parer may itself be made so as to produce a vibration, for example by fitting an unbalanced weight, or making it asymmetrical relative to its rotational axis. The parer may be connected with the driving means through resilient means 13, Figs. 1 and 6, so that it can be forced out of its central position, for example by the process of cutting, to produce a vibration. In a modification, the parer is driven by a motor through a flexible shaft running into a handle and connected to a shaft on which the parer is mounted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 2201/02, [Class 81, Medicine &c.], 27756/04, [Class 131, Toilet &c.], 20449/05, 20606/06, [both in Class 81, Medicine &c.], and 302,219, [Class 19, Brushing &c.].
