Abstract
568,381. Turning-gear. DEHN, F. B. (Continental Motors Corporation). July 11, 1942, No. 9671. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (v)] In a starter for aircraft or other engines in which a multiple reduction gear 32, 34 is interposed between the starter gear 33 and a gear 30 on the crank-shaft 12 and the gearing is enclosed in a casing 15 attached to the engina crank-case 10 and closed by a removable cover 20, the gearing and the starter motor 18 forming a unit assembly. The gear 32, 34 is slidably journalled on a fixed stud 14 carried by the wall 11 of the crank-case and when moved into mesh with the gear 30 remains in mesh with the gear 33. The starting-motor 18 is mounted on the cover 20, which carries a bearing 22 for the spindle 23 of the gear 32, 34 and is secured to the face 17 of the casing 15. The gear 32, 34 is moved axially into mesh with the gear 30 by a lever 25 which also actuates the starting-motor switch 27. The gear 30 is bolted to the crank-shaft 12 and is integral with a smaller gear 40 meshing with a gear 41 on the engine cam-shaft 13. An oil pump 51, an accessory 54 such as a tachometer, a generator 46 and a magneto are driven from the gear 41 as described in Specification 561,833.
