Abstract

568,209. Sails. MEYNE, N. H., and DULLER, A. July 19, 1943, No. 11686. [Class 115] In a sailing craft, one or each mast 21 is capable of being rotated through a considerable angle and forms part of a frame upon which is stretched a rigid or semi-rigid sail, the frame comprising a rearward portion 25 which is angularly adjustable in relation to a forward portion 24 of partstreamlined form which turns with the mast. In the form shown, the mast 21 has a thin rectangular cross-section, the forward part 24 is made of light sheet metal, and the rearward part 25 includes three struts 26, 27, 28 and a rear spar 29. The struts 26, 27, 28 have telescopic rear ends 34, 44 and front ends 30, 40, 50 shaped as shown in Fig. 3, the strut 26 being supported by a cap 60. The strut 26 may be extended outwardly by a halliard 38, the strut 27 may be broken upwardly by a halliard 39, and the strut 28 may be broken upwardly by hand. The front ends 30, 40, 50 are connected to members 47 pivoted at 48 to the mast 21 and separated therefrom by wedge pieces 49, the position of which can be varied by means of an endless cord to adjust the rear part 25 relative to the front part 24. The latter also carries a curved slat 54 adjusted by a cord 57. The mast is stepped in a socket 58 with a grooved pulley 59 for setting the sail. In a modification, the mast is canted forward at a small angle, cable-operated cams are used to extend the struts and hinged former plates keep a proper contour for the forward part of the sail. According to the Provisional Specification, the sail is attached to slats which extend horizontally between the mast and the rear spar.
