Abstract
639,546. Toy aeroplanes. JENKINS, D V., PARSBO, E. M., and PARSBO, H. P. Jan. 30, 1947, No. 2850. [Class 4] A toy aeroplane or glider comprises a hollow fuselage and a pair of wings hinged together at their roots, the roots being shaped to enable a portion of the lower surface of the fuselage to be received between them and being provided with upward projections which, when interconnected by an elastic strand or loop or like resilient connection passing over the top of the fuselage, abut the sides of the latter and ensure that the wings are located at a predetermined dihedral angle relatively to one another, symmetrically to the fuselage. A hollow fuselage 1 is reinforced at its forward and aft ends by stiffening rings 7, 8. The ring 7 supports a plug 39 bored to receive an elastic driven propeller spindle 38, the rear end of the plug being formed into a collar 43 having opposed flat faces arranged to pass between the cross-member of an inverted U-shaped wire undercarriage 33 and a wire 36 positioned below said cross-member and hooked at its ends to retain the undercarriage frame in an extended position. When the plug 39 is rotated a quarter of a turn the wires engage the collar and retain the plug within the fuselage. The ring 8 supports an end cap 10 which carries a hook 15 for the.elastic motor 9 and is provided with a slot 14 to engage a fin 18 and a slot 12 and grooves 13 to engage a cut-out 17 in the tail-plane 16, the leading edge of which engages in slots 11 cut in the rear end of the fuselage, the assembled tail unit being retained on the fuselage by elastic bands 21 engaging a pair of hooks 20 mounted on the fin. The wings 23, 24 are shaped at their roots to rest against the corresponding fuselage walls and are connected at the leading and trailing edges by wires 26 hinged together by strands of cotton, the wings being retained in positionby an elastic band 31 engaging shaped hook-like wire projections 29 which may be constructed as shaped end ribs integrally formed with the wing roots to ensure that the wings are located at the correct dihedral angle. To ensure that the wings are set at the correct angle of incidence, the front face of the ring 7 and the rear face of the ring 8 are bevelled so that when they lie in the vertical plane, the longitudinal centre line of the fuselage is inclined upwardly from tail to nose. The aeroplane may be made from balsawood by the process described in Specification 638,350, [Group VIII]. The rings 7, 8 may be omitted and the fin may be integrally formed with the cap 10.
