Abstract
427,186. Aeroplanes. PETTERS, Ltd., and HILL, G. T. R., Westland Aircraft Works, Yeovil, Somerset. Oct. 17, 1933, No. 28709. [Class 4] A tailless aeroplane has wings comprising a central section 21 with a substantially straight leading edge 22 the span of which does not exceed 40 per cent of the total wing span, and wing extensions 24 swept back rearwardly and tapering from each end of the central section to the wing tips which are provided with control surfaces 25, 26 located wholly behind the average trailing edge 23 of the section 1. The wing extensions are swept back at an angle, measured at the quarter chord of the wing in excess of 35‹ to the leading edge of the central section. In one form, the wing 21, 24 is supported by pairs of struts 27, 28 and 29, 30 from a central boat 20. The wings are further supported by pairs of struts 31, 32, 33, 34 and bracing wires, not shown, and struts 36 which are connected to wing floats 35. The power units are merged in the contour of the central wing section and drive tractor screws 38 and pusher screws 39. In a modification, the boat carries stub floats, and the trailing edges of the wing extensions meet and form a V. The wing floats and tractor screws are omitted and a single centrally arranged pusher-screw may replace the two pusher-screws. In a further modification, the wing is carried on a central fuselage provided with a tractor screw, a tandem wheel undercarriage as described in Specification 352,962 and two short underwings carrying at their outer ends rearwardly projecting skids braced from the wings. In a modification of this latter construction, a machine gun is provided in a cockpit at the rear of the fuselage. In a further modification of the last described construction, the section 21 is bent down and supported directly on the fuselage and the leading edge 22 is slightly lowered ; the fuselage is provided with a single pusher propeller and further reinforcing struts are provided to support the wings.
