Abstract

567,967. Converting electric currents ; frictional electric machines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and EARP, C. W. Feb. 23, 1940, No. 3434. [Classes 35 and 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] In a beacon system for guiding aircraft using different radiations identified by different tones, mechanical or rotary modulators are used and are arranged to produce either a single sideband, or a double side-band with carrier suppressed. Double side-bands f, f2 are simultaneously produced by rotating a coil W<SP>2</SP> at a tone frequency f2 in an electromagnetic field created by coils F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> energized at a carrier frequency f<SP>1</SP> ; or by rotating collector platen at frequency f<SP>2</SP> in an electrostatic field of frequency f<SP>1</SP>. When pairs of coils F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> are used, energized in phase quadrature to produce a rotating field, Fig. 2a, or when a rotating electrostatic field is employed, Fig. 2b, the pick-up is of a single frequency f +, f2 or f -, f2 according to the direction of rotation of the pick-up element relatively to that of the field. For higher frequencies f1, the line L carrying the short-wave energy is bent into a loop P of length equal to one or more wave-lengths, and a single collector plate R, Fig. 3a, or a pair of collector plates R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>. Fig. 3b, pick up the side frequency f 1 + mf2, where m is the number of wave-lengths in the loop, and f2 the rotation frequency of the collector plates. To overcome the effect of the open end of the line L, dummy collector plates connected by a tuning-coil may be rotated a quarter-wave in advance of the collector plates R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, so as to short-circuit the line at this point. The loop may be formed of a series of quarter-wave portions, Fig. 4, brought in to plates 1 ... 8 over which the collector plate R sweeps. In a further arrangement, two loops fed with quadrature phases are connected at half-wave intervals to plates which alternate with each other in their position round the ring swept by the collector plate, Fig. 5 (not shown),
