Abstract
567,898. Air compressing plant. TOMLINSON, A. V. (Bendix Westinghouse Automotive Air Brake Co.). June 25, 1943, No. 10296. [Class 8 (i)] A compressor 10 takes air from atmosphere through a check valve 14 and delivers it to a receiver 11 through conduits 15, 17 connected by a pressure-responsive valvular device 16 until the pressure in' receiver 11 reaches a certain value ; a pressure-responsive governor 24 then delivers air from the receiver 11 to a conduit 20 through a manual valve 64 and so depresses a diaphragm 39 of valve device 16 causing its valve 45 to leave the upper seat where it prevented passage of air through a conduit 18 with a check valve to high-pressure receiver 12, and to bed on its lower seat where it stops communication between the compressor outlet and the inlet of receiver 11. Air is then drawn from receiver 11 past a valve 57 operated by a diaphragm subject to the pressure in a conduit 29 through a valve 30, and passed to receiver 12. This cycle of operations continues till a pressure is reached in receiver 12 at which a byepass valve connects the two receivers. The valve 64 may be manually operated at this pressure, releasing pressure on the diaphragm 39 and in the conduit 29 and operating the valve 30 through a conduit 62 to maintain a closed circulation through the compressor and receiver 11 only. In another form, the valve 64 is omitted, the governor 24 connecting directly with conduits 20, 29, and the receiver 12 is provided in place of relief valve 58 with a governor similar to governor 24 and controlling the passage of high-pressure air through conduit 62 to valve 30. In a third form, the byepass valve is again provided, but the valve 64 is placed between the receiver 11 and the governor 24 and the pipe 62 which it controls leads through a pressure regulator valve to the pipe 21, joining the receiver 11 with the compressor inlet ; the valve 30 is omitted.
